The first meeting of the Friends of the P. I. Nixon Library occurred on December 7th, 1971 at the University of Texas Medical School Library in San Antonio. Unanimously elected officers included John L. Matthews, President; Dr. P.I. Nixon, Jr., President-Elect; and Mrs. Albert Steves, III, Secretary.
The purpose of the organization at that time was to foster growth, development and utilization of a collection of books, manuscripts and other materials relating to the history of the health sciences. Today, the board members continue to honor that original mission through various education and community engagement activities.
