Title: Biography of a Painting II: Eakins' "The Portrait of Samuel D. Gross"

Summary: This presentation continues the theme of learning the history of medicine through the exploration of art. Thomas Eakins' most famous painting featured Samuel D. Gross, an American surgeon and teacher of medicine. This talk will explore the history of surgeons and surgery in the late 1800s through the lens of Eakins' works. This is the second talk by Dr. Karnad that focuses on the history of medicine and art. This lecture will also feature works from the P.I. Nixon Medical Historical Library.

Speaker Info: Arnad Karnad, M.D. is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology-Oncology, Department of Medicine, Mays Cancer Center UT Health MD Anderson, member and past President of the Executive Board of the Friends of the P. I. Nixon Medical Historical Library at the Long School of Medicine, and a member of the American Osler Society. Dr. Karnad is an advocate for teaching history of medicine at all levels of training and is the author of  a biography, "Intrinsic Factors: William Bosworth Castle and the Development of Hematology and Clinical Investigation at Boston City Hospital".

Carolina Velez-Mejia, M.D. is an internal medicine resident passionate about the history of medicine.
