Mendeley is a reference manager. It supports web-based and locally-installed applications. It is intended to facilitate the management and sharing of research.
Three PhD students founded Mendeley in 2007 and, in the following years, developed an active community of researcher-users. Elsevier purchased Mendeley in 2013, which created some controversies in the user community.

One of Mendeley's strengths is that it allows users to share documents in a crowd-sourced online catalog consisting of millions of papers. The catalog is searchable by keyword and can be limited by field, document type, date range or discipline.
