Family Medicine Residency Resource Guide: Key Info

Affiliations/Associations

AAFP - The American Academy of Family Physicians, the national association of family doctors, created in 1947 to promote and maintain high quality standards for family doctors who are providing continuing comprehensive health care to the public.  AAFP provides free membership to medical students who are enrolled in an LCME accredited medical school.  Resident membership is provided at a low annual fee.

ABFM - American Board of Family Medicine, one of 24 medical specialty boards that make up the American Board of Medical Specialties, founded in 1969.  A not-for-profit, private organization whose mission is to improve the health of the public through Board Certification.  Through ABMS, the boards work together to establish common standards for physicians to achieve and maintain board certification.

TAFP - Texas Academy of Family Physicians, the state of Texas' largest medical specialty organization, serves the family medicine community and provides a unified voice for family medicine.  Membership is provided through AAFP membership.

STFM - The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, an association of family medicine educators founded in 1967, includes professors, preceptors, residency program faculty, residency program directors and others involved in family medicine education.
