Johns Hopkins Nursing EBP Model

Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Model

  • Problem-solving approach to clinical decision-making
  • Designed specifically to meet the needs of the practicing nurse
  • Uses a three-step process called PET: practice question, evidence, and translation

integrated-Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services

“Successful implementation (SI) of evidence into practice is a function of the quality and type of evidence (E), the characteristics of the setting or context (C) and the way in which the evidence was introduced or facilitated (F) into practice.” Kitson, Harvey, McCormack (1998)
 
This framework considers:
  • Evidence
  • Context
  • Facilitation

To be key to successful implementation. The practitioner must be very clear on these three areas. Malone (2004)

Iowa Model

The Iowa model revised focuses on:

  • Translational research
  • Patient engagement
  • Use of a systematic approach to implementation
  • Putting evidence into action.

The steps in this model are:

  • Select a topic
  • Form a team
  • Retrieve evidence
  • Grade the evidence
  • Develop an EBP standard
  • Implement the EBP
  • Evaluate

Evaluating Models

Choose a model that is:

  1. Relevant to the area of practice
  2. Appropriate for your resources
  3. In sync, like clinical decision-making models for clinical decision-making problems

  • Curriculum available through the AHRQ website; implementation requires pre-training
  • Offers an app with communication tools and checklists
  • Focuses on improving patient safety by developing a culture of safety and teamwork skills
  • Developed by Department of Defense's Patient Safety Program in collaboration with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
