UT Health San Antonio Faculty Publications: Altmetric Donut

What is Altmetric?

Altmetric is an alternative method of measurement of scholarly work based on online presence. Altmetric tracks mentions of a work in social media outlets such as Twitter, blog posts, and research networking sites. Altmetric begin collating the online mentions and shares of your research across the sources they track as soon as it's published, meaning you can get almost immediate feedback on how it's being received long before any citation data becomes available.

The donut links to an Altmetric Details page with the following information:

  • Donut and Attention Score
  • Summary Counts
  • Bibliographic Details
  • Original Mentions
  • Demographics and Ranking
  • Access to Article

Transparent donuts are records for research outputs that do not have Altmetric Attention Scores (i.e., research outputs with no Altmetric mentions yet).  Transparent donuts might still have underlying data, such as Mendeley readers, but these data sources do not contribute to the Altmetric Score.
