Scopus: Cans and Cannots

What Scopus can do for you

Scopus can:

  • Track citations over time
  • Set Citation Alerts
  • View h-index for specific authors
  • Assess trends in research results
  • Analyze journal using SNIP, SJR, and Elsevier's Journal Analyzer
  • Bulk retrieval in PDF format
  • Identify and match an organization with its research output
  • Identify collaborators or subject experts
  • Manage your impact with your ORCHID ID

What Scopus CANNOT do

Use Emtree.

It's true that you can access Embase citations through Scopus, but it only allows keyword searching. If you look for the term "heart attack", you will miss anything indexed using the Emtree terminology "myocardial infarction".

Workaround:

  1. Find an article you like
  2. Look for the Emtree indexing
  3. Make notes of those terms
  4. Use the Emtree terms as your keywords
