What is Creative Commons?

Creative Commons logoCreative Commons licenses give everyone a standardized way to grant the public permission to use their creative work under copyright law.

Licenses are built by adding different conditions, allowing customization of each work.

  • CC licenses cannot be revoked once applied
  • You must own copyright of the work to apply a CC license

Acronym Guide

Acronym Meaning Details
CC Creative Commons Blanket license for a creative commons work.
BY Attribution Attribution, or credit, must be given to the creator of the work.
SA Share Alike The work must be shared under the same terms as the original.
NC Non Commercial Only noncommercial uses are permitted.
ND No Derivatives The work must be used as is. No Derivatives or adaptations allowed.
CC0 Creative Commons Zero The work is in the Public Domain. The work may be used in any way, without restriction.

Five Types of Creative Commons

You are free to share and adapt. Must give appropriate credit.

 

Share Alike

Lets you remix, tweak, and build upon the original work, even for commercial purposes.

 

No Derivative Works

Free to use and share, but must be changes allowed.

 

Non-Commercial

Can copy, distribute, display, perform, or remix work - but only for non-commercial purposes.

 

Public Domain

CC0 - waive all interests and rights that may exist in the work worldwide; effectiveness depends on jurisdiction

0 - free of all known copyright restrictions

Public Domain

Public Domain logoPublic domain refers to works that do not fall under copyright restrictions.

Three main categories of public domain works:

  • Works that automatically enter the public domain upon creation (titles, names, short phrases, slogans, familiar symbols, numbers, ideas and facts, government works)
  • Works that have been assigned to public domain by creators
  • Works that entered public domain after copyright expired
