UT authors publishing in American Chemical Society (ACS) journals can now make their research more openly accessible. This opportunity is available through the UT System’s Read & Green agreement with ACS.
Under this agreement:
To participate, authors must opt in during the ACS Journal Publishing Agreement process by selecting the option to retain copyright and allow repository deposit.
NOTE: This agreement does not cover article processing charges (APCs) for immediate open access publication. Authors who wish to publish their final articles open access may still do so by paying an APC.
Most funders, such as NIH, require you to publicly share the accepted manuscript (the version after peer review but before final formatting). Usually this entails depositing or posting the accepted manuscript to a repository such as PubMed Central. This is called green open access. Making the fully edited, published article (also called the version of record) publicly available is gold open access.
This agreement also helps UT authors meet federal public access requirements for research funded by U.S. government agencies, which mandate that accepted manuscripts be made immediately available to the public beginning January 1, 2026.
