Mark your calendars for Briscoe Library’s 2nd Annual Student Appreciation Week!
Student Appreciation Week will take place October 29th through November 2nd from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm each day. Join us for food, prizes, and fun activities, like our Halloween photo wall, painting, Virtual Reality games, and pet therapy animals! The Awards Reception for the Image of Research Photography Competition will be held on Thursday, November 1st. Stay tuned for more information.

Miguel A. Vazquez, MD – Exploring the Intersection of Art and Medicine/Physician as Artist
“From a young age, I was inexplicably drawn (pun intended) to the sciences. This eventually led to a career in family medicine. In this career, I have been fortunate to share our human experience by being with families when I would deliver a baby, and, at the other end of the spectrum, offering some comfort during the inevitable time of passing.”

Check out the latest issue of the Mission magazine, to see a featured article about the treasures of the P.I. Nixon Medical Historical Library. The P.I. Nixon Library is located on the 5th floor of the Briscoe Library and is home to several famous historical works including: De Humani Corporis Fabrica, known as the first scientifically accurate textbook of anatomy, by Andreas Vesalius; Natural History of Teeth by John Hunter; and Illustrations of the Great Operations of Surgery, by Charles Bell to name a few.

The Nixon Library is used by students, faculty, and staff, but has also been a resource to local and global communities. Most recently we have had visitors from Japan and Mexico.

Based on his April 2011 New York Times Magazine cover article and his latest book (The Case Against Sugar), Gary Taubes will discuss the history, politics, and science of sugar and high fructose corn syrup, arguing that these sweeteners may indeed be far more harmful to our health than public health authorities have been willing to accept.

Here’s a sneak peek at Briscoe library’s new vending machines waiting in the warehouse for shipment.
The fresh food, coffee, and snack machines are expected to arrive before the end of September.
Having these vending machines means that food and coffee will be available for students in the library 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You will no longer have to leave campus when you get hungry at night or on weekends, food and coffee will be right here in the library!
Work has begun on transforming the library entry wall into an art display space. Please excuse a little extra noise and mess as the wall continues to develop.
In the near future, the space will have its first exhibit comprised of entries to the first annual Image of Research Photography Competition.

The library will run two trials over the next month (from Sept 15 – Oct 15). Both resources offer visual reference guides/videos for physical examinations and other clinical skills.
