3D Printing Service: General

Get started with 3D printing

The 3D Printing service is available on a limited basis. If you have a print request contact Kelley Minars, Creative Technologies Librarian.

What is 3D Printing?

3D printers use digital models to fabricate three dimensional objects one layer at a time. The process has been used in engineering and commercial settings for almost 30 years. Low cost 3D printers, do-it-yourself kits, and open source software are bringing the technology into broader use.

What printers do you have?
The UT Health San Antonio Library has three 3D printers.

How large of an object can I print?

The Makerbot prints objects up to 9.9 x 7.8 x 5.9 inches, and the TAZ prints objects up to 11.02 x 11.02 x 9.8 inches.

What materials do you provide?

We primarily use two types of filament: recyclable PLA plastic, and NinjaFlex flexible filament.

Who can use this service?
The 3D print service is available for use by students, faculty, researchers, and mentors affiliated with UT Health San Antonio.

Is there a fee?
Yes, there is a small fee to cover material costs. The fee is $0.10 per gram for standard PLA and $0.15 per gram for NinjaFlex. Prices are based on the material use estimate generated by our 3D printing software.

How often can I print?
Submissions are limited to 3 prints per month, per user, for non-educational and non-medical items. Any request beyond the third will be placed in a queue and held until the following month.
